Effect of Absorption of Essential Oils on the Changes of Arousal and Antistress

Abstract
The effect of nasal absorption of blending essential oils on the changes of arousal and antistress was investigated. Stimulating oil containing lemon, rosemary and basil, and sedating oil containing lavender, marjoram, and clary sage were absorbed into 43 (male: 21, female: 22) university students for 5 minutes using oil nebulizer in the comfortable room. For testing the effect of oils, human brain electroencephalogram (EEG), blood pressure, and heart rate were measured and stress arousal check list (SACL) and Spielberger¢¥s State-trait anxiety inventory test were tested before and after oil absorptions, and then the results were compared. The stimulating oil induced the decrease of antistress as well as the increase of arousal, and these data were additionally supported by that a wave in the frontal lobe and temporal lobe regions in EEG increased specially in the man¢¥s group but not female group. On the other hand, sedating oil was significantly reduced systolic blood pressure and stress. In conclusion, it was shown that human psychophysiology could be influenced specifically by short time absorption of essential oils.
